Welcome to Fort Irwin
After a long flight from Atlanta to Las Vegas and a long drive from Las Vegas to Fort Irwin, Ryan and I are finally here with the soldiers of the 3rd Brigade at the National Training Center.
We’ve already met with the 3rd Brigade’s Public Affairs Officer, Major Joe Sowers. He got us briefed on what’s going on, and how we can hit the ground running first thing in the morning.
We’re spending the night near the 3rd Brigade Headquarters and let me tell you, the living is quite spartan.
Home for the night is a large tent with a bunch of guys in it. We’re all sleeping on cots and rumor has it, nobody’s showered in quite some time. Fortunately, the tent is heated, because it’s pretty cold out here in the California desert tonight.
Interestingly, there are a few other reporters here, embedded with the 3rd Brigade during their training. We met a TV news crew out of Finland when we arrived tonight and apparently there is a French TV crew here as well. Without a doubt, there are a lot of eyes on these soldiers as they prepare to deploy to Iraq.
It has been a long day so I’ll sign off for the night.
Check back for more tomorrow!

Do Finland and France have military personnel in Iraq? If so, there must not be very many.

Thank you Chris & Ryan for embedding yourselves among the fine soldiers of 3rd ID. These guys are all very brave heros and deserve to be treated as so. The entire nation should know about these guys. Alot of these soliders, including my husband, are facing their third tour to Iraq, a third time leaving their families for another year. And this does not count the seemingly endless days, weeks, and months away for schools or training.
Thank you for shining a bright light on our guys and gals of the 3rd ID. It is so hard to be seperated from our loved ones now, espically knowing that in a few short weeks they will be leaving again for Iraq. Lets keep in mind it is so much harder for the soldiers, at least when we are left home, we still have our comforts, our own bed, our church homes, starbucks and blockbuster on every corner. If they are lucky, this time our guys will have decent accomodations. Even if America does not support the war, lets be sure to support our soliders! They need our support when at home and while serving our country in Iraq.
Every time we see a solider with that 3rd ID patch on his arm, Lets not only Thank him/her, lets let him know we are praying for him/her everyday.
Lifting the entire 3rd ID up in prayer,
Christi B
